Response to the Cancer Reform Strategy

The CCG has pledged to review the Government’s progress in implementing the Cancer Reform Strategy (CRS) and making the results available to everyone with a stake in improving outcomes for people with cancer.

As part of this commitment, the CCG consulted its members following the publication of the CRS. This response will form the basis of the CCG’s work, identifying the areas of the CRS to focus on and to hold the Government to account on during 2008 and beyond.

The CCG has also reassessed its direction in the new context of the CRS in 2008. Download the revised CCG manifesto here

Launch of the White Paper

In 2007, the CCG launched its White Paper entitled “Getting it right for people with cancer: what the voluntary sector wants from the Cancer Reform Strategy” which was the result of a major consultation with members.

Written by health policy expert Edmund Waterhouse, the White Paper presented a set of proposals designed to inform and influence the Cancer Reform Strategy.

Proposals included:

  • Giving more choice for people with cancer
  • Putting patients in control of their care and treatment
  • Investing in prevention and raising awareness of symptoms
  • Promoting and supporting cancer research

Welcoming the report, National Cancer Director Mike Richards said: “This is a great example of how charities can work together effectively. The voluntary sector makes a vital contribution to cancer services in England, and the expertise represented in these proposals is significant and welcome.”

Green Paper

Prior to the White Paper, in August 2006, the Cancer Campaigning Group (CCG) published a “Green Paper” consultation document. This was aimed at making the case for a second National Cancer Plan and followed a series of seminars on cancer policy. In November 2006 as a direct result of this, the Government announced its intention to produce a “Cancer Reform Strategy”.
