Cancer Policy in the Party Manifestos
This week the three main parties launched their election manifestos. Issues facing the cancer community featured high up on all three parties’ health agendas and it continues to be a key theme during the election campaign.
Labour’s plans centre around individual patient care. They have pledged to provide individual care plans and budgets along with one-to-one nursing for cancer patients. They have also promised to continue to ensure that patients see a specialist within two weeks of GP referral and test results within one week. In contrast, the Conservative Party have focussed on improving access for all to vital cancer drugs, with proposals for a Cancer Drug Fund to increase access to medicines, commissioning of rarer cancers to be reformed to improve access, and a roll out of screening programmes for common cancers. The Liberal Democrats have pledged to protect frontline NHS services including cancer treatments, and have said that all patients will be given control over their own care budget.
